She taught for several years at an elementary school in the South Bronx as a science specialist.
Later she was asked to join the staff of the newly formed Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York as Director of Admissions and Foreign Student Advisor.
Roberta graduated from Hunter College High School in Manhattan.
She then attended Hunter College in the Bronx (now Lehman College of the City University of New York) and earned a degree in elementary education.She met her husband, John Flowers, who was a chemistry professor at Medgar Evers.
